Israel has launched airstrikes in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 20 people, predominantly women and children, in central Gaza. This attack comes amid ongoing tensions and protests in Israel regarding Gaza's governance post-war. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political rival, Benny Gantz, has threatened to withdraw from the government if a plan for Gaza's administration is not developed by June 8.

In response to the escalating violence, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is set to meet with top Israeli leaders to discuss a proposed US initiative. The plan aims to involve Saudi Arabia in facilitating Palestinian Authority rule in Gaza in exchange for recognition of Israel and eventual statehood. However, Netanyahu, opposing Palestinian statehood, rejects proposals for open security control over Gaza and cooperation with unaffiliated Palestinians. Gantz's potential withdrawal poses a threat to Netanyahu's coalition, potentially leading to increased reliance on far-right allies supporting controversial policies like voluntary Palestinian migration and settlement expansion in Gaza.
