During a rally in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a verbal attack on the BJP, accusing them of extreme measures and intimidation tactics. Banerjee's speech, targeted the opposition, stating, "These people aim to either eliminate individuals or imprison them."
She claimed that her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, would have faced gunfire if he had encountered an individual allegedly conducting surveillance at his Kolkata residence.
The statements come amidst rising political tensions in the state as campaigning for the upcoming elections intensifies.
"If you were confident that you would win with peoples’ votes, then what was the need to terrorise people?" she added.
Kolkata police made a significant arrest on Monday, apprehending Rajaram Rege, a Mumbai-based individual, for purportedly conducting surveillance outside Abhishek Banerjee's residence. Rege was associated with David Headley, infamous for his involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks.
"The BJP is targeting me and Abhishek, we are not safe, but we are also not afraid of the saffron party's conspiracy. We urge everyone to be on guard against a conspiracy against TMC leaders and the people of West Bengal," she added.
