The Health Minister has proposed a series of measures to improve tourist safety at Digha, including advising visitors not to enter the sea wearing sarees or salwar kameez. Speaking to journalists at Digha State General Hospital, the minister said loose traditional clothing can increase the risk of accidents during sea bathing, particularly on weekends when tourist footfall is high. He recommended the use of swimsuits or other clothing suitable for sea bathing in the interest of public safety.
The minister also suggested that tourists who choose to wear traditional attire should use bright-coloured sarees or salwar kameez to improve visibility during emergencies. He further advised the use of fluorescent caps to help lifeguards identify swimmers from a distance. As part of the proposed safety measures, he recommended deploying trained personnel at intervals of every 100 metres along the beach and strengthening lifeguard arrangements to enhance emergency response.
The Health Minister also stressed that tourists should not enter the sea or coastal areas under the influence of alcohol. He requested the local MLA to ensure effective monitoring so that intoxicated visitors are prevented from entering the water. He also referred to the proposal to establish a trauma care centre in the area, including a burn care unit, and said the facility would also provide treatment for drowning-related emergencies.
