Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari indicated that the state's name may not be changed to "Bangla", stating that the people share a deep historical identity and emotional connection with the name "West Bengal". Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting at Nabanna, he said the state government would present its official stand if the Central Government sought its opinion on the proposal to rename the state, while keeping public sentiment in mind. The Chief Minister also announced that a special session of the State Legislative Assembly will be held on August 12, during which important bills related to the restructuring of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the Howrah Municipal Corporation will be introduced.
The Chief Minister said the proposed legislation seeks to increase the number of wards in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation from 144 to 209 and in the Howrah Municipal Corporation from 50 to 68. He also provided an update on the state's Annapurna Yojana, stating that 2.16 crore applications have been received and that the scrutiny process is in its final stage. According to him, complete details of the scheme will be announced on August 10 at 2 PM, while the transfer of financial assistance directly to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries will begin on August 17. He said the scheme will benefit financially eligible citizens between the ages of 25 and 60, with the designated amount to be credited directly to beneficiaries during the second week of every month.
Addressing misleading information circulating on social media regarding the Annapurna Yojana, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari warned that strict legal action would be taken against those attempting to mislead the public. He also stated that discussions regarding compensation-related matters involving the Tata Group had taken place in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court and the tribunal. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Tata Group would continue expanding its presence in the state and reiterated that the government is giving priority to women's economic empowerment, social security, and new industrial investment.
