Kolkata Police have launched a comprehensive investigation after three women, including a Bangladeshi national, mysteriously disappeared from a shelter home on Park Street. The missing individuals have been identified as 31-year-old Runa Begum from Dhaka, Bangladesh; 39-year-old Suchitra, who is speech- and hearing-impaired; and 19-year-old Manisha Kumari from Bhojpur, Bihar. All three women were previously rescued by authorities and placed in the shelter home for safe custody, where they lived together in the same living quarters.
The incident came to light after the shelter home authorities lodged a formal complaint at the Park Street police station, alleging that the women had been kidnapped and hidden by an unknown gang. However, the home administration is facing sharp scrutiny for filing the police complaint nearly three weeks after the initial disappearance. Police are investigating both the missing persons aspect and the suspicious delay by the home authorities, especially following a recent similar incident involving a Bangladeshi minor fleeing a shelter in the nearby Karaya area.
Investigators reviewing CCTV footage from the shelter home and surrounding premises discovered that the three women had meticulously planned their escape three weeks prior. Security camera footage shows the women unlocking the facility's doors with a key between 2:00 AM and 2:30 AM, covering their faces, and walking out undetected. Shelter home staff only realized they were missing the following morning, but subsequent searches yielded no results.
