An alarming trend has emerged as more young adults are reporting cases of back pain, with medical diagnoses indicating early onset osteoarthritis. While traditionally associated with aging, experts warn that sedentary lifestyles and prolonged periods of inactivity are contributing to a surge in osteoarthritis cases among the younger population.

Dr. Ashish Arbat, Orthopedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Jahangir Multispeciality Hospital in Pune, shed light on the concerning shift. He stated, "Osteoarthritis typically manifests after fifty, but deficiencies in essential vitamins and bone brittleness can accelerate joint degeneration. Regular exercise, weight management, and proper healthcare are crucial in alleviating joint stress and maintaining muscular strength."

The impact of remote work arrangements enforced during the Covid-19 lockdown has exacerbated the issue, with companies continuing to embrace work-from-home policies. Dr. Arbat emphasized that prolonged periods of sitting and reduced physical activity are contributing factors to the rising prevalence of osteoarthritis among younger individuals.

Formerly considered a condition primarily affecting the elderly, osteoarthritis now afflicts individuals between the ages of 35 to 45, marking a significant departure from its traditional demographic. Joints commonly affected include the knees, waist, neck, and shoulders, indicating a shift in the pattern of osteoarthritis manifestation.

As cases of osteoarthritis among young adults continue to rise, experts advocate for proactive measures to promote bone health and prevent joint degeneration. Incorporating regular exercise routines, maintaining a healthy weight, and prioritizing overall health and well-being are essential strategies in mitigating the risk of osteoarthritis at a younger age.
