Following the arrests of Nirmal Ghosh and Sanjib Mukherjee in connection with the hasty cremation in the Abhaya case, West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul expressed satisfaction over the police action. The arrests were executed after the victim’s family lodged a fresh complaint following directions from Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari to expedite justice in the case. A third accused individual, Somnath Dey, remains untraceable as police continue their search operations.
Reacting to the ongoing investigation, Agnimitra Paul questioned why former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not been taken into custody alongside the arrested individuals. She alleged that Mamata Banerjee held key administrative responsibilities during the incident and oversaw operations alongside top officials, raising concerns regarding the timing of the post-mortem and the treatment of the victim's family.
Paul asserted that accountability should extend to all leaders involved during the initial handling of the case. Demanding the immediate arrest of Somnath Dey, she emphasized that if local leaders are being held responsible for procedural lapses and alleged cover-ups, Mamata Banerjee must also be investigated and arrested for her administrative role at that time.
