Two months after a building collapse in Taratala claimed the lives of 16 workers, the West Bengal government has announced strict measures to curb illegal multi-storey constructions across the state. Following a meeting with a delegation from the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI) on Thursday, Municipal and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul stated that an audit of stalled projects found major irregularities in 27 constructions, though 193 projects received clearances.
Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari issued a stern warning to promoters and government officials involved in approving or executing illegal constructions. The state government announced plans to organize a special public event where accused promoters and responsible government officials will be brought live before the media to answer for regulatory lapses and unauthorized building activities.
The administration emphasized that no concessions will be granted to individuals or officials who permitted illegal structures during previous tenures. Minister Agnimitra Paul reiterated that both promoters and consenting government personnel will face strict penalties and live public accountability as part of the state's ongoing drive against unauthorized multi-storey developments.
