The Fast Track Court (FTC 2nd Court) in Basirhat has sentenced three men to life imprisonment in connection with a brutal acid attack on a woman, marking a major success for the trial monitoring team of the Basirhat Police District. The court also ordered each of the convicts to pay a fine of ₹2.60 lakh. The conviction was delivered within 16 months of the submission of the charge sheet, reflecting the state administration's zero-tolerance stance against crimes against women.
The horrific incident took place on January 11, 2025, near the Chak Farasatpur area under the Matia police station jurisdiction. Miscreants riding a motorcycle threw acid at the victim, leaving her severely injured on the road. Following an immediate investigation, police arrested three suspects—aged 50, 31, and 24—all residents of the Sardar Ati area in Basirhat.
A police team led by LSI Payel Biswas conducted a thorough and rapid probe into the case before submitting the charge sheet. Strong legal arguments presented by the prosecution and state government representatives successfully established the guilt of the accused. The quick trial and strict sentencing have been hailed by local authorities as a significant step toward ensuring safety and justice for women in the region.
