Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested by police in Hooghly on Tuesday in connection with a rape case filed by a medical student. The complaint, lodged at the Mogra Police Station, alleges that Porel established a physical relationship with the woman under the false promise of marriage, subsequently recorded intimate moments, and later used the private material to intimidate her. Following interrogation, Porel was taken into custody, subjected to a medical examination, and produced before the Chinsurah Court to initiate formal legal proceedings.
According to the FIR, the complainant alleged that their relationship dissolved after she discovered his involvement with other women, despite prior marriage discussions between their families. The complaint details an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, claiming Porel unlawfully confined her, withheld food, and kept her isolated, leaving her physically weakened and requiring immediate medical treatment. The police confirmed that these allegations remain part of an active investigation and have not yet been established in a court of law.
The arrest follows directions from the Calcutta High Court after the complainant approached the court alleging lack of progress in the investigation. In addition to ordering Porel’s arrest, the High Court directed Mogra Police to seize his electronic devices to prevent any unauthorized dissemination of private material. Investigating officers have already seized a pen drive for forensic evaluation as part of ongoing proceedings.
