Police in Paschim Bardhaman district recovered ₹48 lakh from a closed brick kiln in the Gaurbazar area of Durgapur. The discovery came during a routine theft investigation by the Faridpur Police Station, after officers received a tip-off from secret sources. A search operation was conducted at the abandoned facility, leading to the unexpected recovery of the cash hoard.
The incident comes on the heels of major raids in neighboring Birbhum district, where investigative agencies seized a massive stockpile of cash and gold from properties linked to sand and stone trader Tulu Mandal. Authorities are currently probing the origin of the ₹48 lakh recovered in Durgapur to determine whether the funds are connected to the theft case under investigation or stem from other illicit activities.
Asansol Durgapur Police Commissioner Dr. Pranab Kumar confirmed that the recovery was made during an ongoing theft inquiry and stated that the investigation remains active. Meanwhile, the seizure has triggered a political debate, with local sources noting the brick kiln was previously visited by Trinamool Congress leaders. District BJP spokesperson Sumanta Mandal alleged the site served as a meeting spot for local Trinamool figures before elections and demanded a thorough investigation into potential political links.
