In a major education policy decision, the West Bengal government has announced that a chapter dedicated to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee will be included in the school curriculum starting from the upcoming academic year. The decision was finalized during the maiden meeting of the special committee constituted to oversee initiatives celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder. Following the meeting at Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari briefed reporters on the key resolutions taken by the state government.
Under the approved framework, the School Education Department will integrate Dr. Mookerjee's life history, statecraft, and contributions into textbooks across all academic levels, extending from primary schools to universities. The curriculum will specifically emphasize his role in the creation of West Bengal, his tenure as Kolkata University Vice-Chancellor, his nationalistic vision, and his contributions as Independent India’s first Industry Minister. To support comprehensive study, a dedicated standalone book will also be published for students.
The initiative forms part of a year-long statewide celebration marking Dr. Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary, which includes administrative, cultural, and educational programs across districts and educational institutions. State authorities stated that integrating his self-sacrifice and legislative contributions into academia aims to ensure that future generations understand his foundational role in shaping modern West Bengal and the nation.
