The West Bengal government has clarified that schools are free to retain blue and white uniforms despite the ongoing debate over changes to school dress codes. School Education Minister Dipak Barman announced that individual schools can decide the colour of their uniforms, but the 'Biswa Bangla' logo will not be permitted on school uniforms.
The clarification comes amid widespread speculation following the state government's decision to revise several policies introduced by the previous administration, including changes to school uniforms and the curriculum. Questions had been raised over whether the traditional blue-and-white uniforms used in government schools would be replaced after the change in government.
Addressing a press conference at Bikash Bhavan on Thursday, the minister said the choice of uniform colour rests entirely with the school authorities. He stated that schools may continue with blue and white uniforms if they wish, adding that there is no objection to the colour combination. However, he made it clear that the 'Biswa Bangla' logo cannot be used on school uniforms.
Dipak Barman said that the design and colour of school uniforms are often linked to a school's history, identity and emotional significance. For that reason, he said, schools should have the freedom to decide their own uniforms instead of following a uniform colour policy across the state.
The issue gained attention as discussions continued over changes to the appearance of government buildings and public infrastructure after the change in government. While the state has initiated changes to the colour scheme of several government establishments, the minister's clarification confirms that schools can retain blue-and-white uniforms, provided the 'Biswa Bangla' logo is removed.
