Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested in Odisha on Thursday in connection with the alleged hurried cremation of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder victim. The arrest follows an FIR registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s father, who alleged that the cremation was conducted in undue haste under the former MLA's supervision to prevent a second autopsy and conceal evidence.
The police action comes days after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed authorities to register a separate case to investigate the circumstances surrounding the cremation. Attending a programme to mark the second death anniversary of the doctor, the Chief Minister highlighted serious procedural questions, including the alleged waiver of cremation fees and the absence of signatures from the victim's family members on relevant official documents.
Based on the father's complaint and the subsequent directives, law enforcement agencies initiated a fresh probe into the matter. Nirmal Ghosh was located in Odisha and taken into custody by the police. Further investigation into the alleged irregularities and procedural lapses during the cremation process is currently underway.
