India's Dilip Mahadu Gavit delivered a record-breaking performance to win the gold medal in the men's 100m T47 event at the Commonwealth Games, clocking a season-best 10.71 seconds to set a new Games record. Fellow Indian Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath secured the silver medal with a time of 10.83 seconds, completing a historic one-two finish for India, while England's Kevin Santos claimed bronze in 10.85 seconds.
The 23-year-old's victory earned India its third gold medal of the Games and lifted the country to eighth place in the overall medal standings with three gold, nine silver and three bronze medals. Speaking after the race, Gavit admitted he had a slow start but gradually gathered momentum despite competing on a rain-soaked track. He said the weather made it difficult to warm up and affected his timing, but expressed satisfaction at securing the gold medal.
Gavit said his focus now is on winning more international medals rather than pursuing employment. He identified the upcoming Para Asian Games in Japan and the next Paralympic Games as his primary targets, expressing confidence that he can achieve even better results in future competitions.
The gold medal marks the latest milestone in Gavit's remarkable journey from rural Maharashtra to the international stage. He lost his left hand as a child after delayed access to medical treatment, while growing up in an area with limited sports infrastructure. His talent was discovered by coach Vaijanth Kale, who persuaded his family to allow him to train in athletics despite the challenges.
Before establishing himself in para athletics, Gavit had already demonstrated his ability by competing successfully against able-bodied athletes, winning medals at the Khelo India Youth Games and the Under-18 level. His success in the men's 100m T47 category, reserved for athletes with a unilateral arm impairment or limb deficiency, now places him among India's leading para sprinters as he prepares for future international events.
