The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in rainfall across West Bengal, with Kolkata expected to receive more rain from Monday and North Bengal likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers over the next several days. An Orange alert has been issued for parts of North Bengal, while heavy rainfall warnings remain in place for several districts.
According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, the low-pressure system that influenced weather over the state has weakened and moved towards Chhattisgarh. Although its direct impact on West Bengal has reduced, the prevailing monsoon conditions are expected to sustain rainfall across the state. Light rain is likely in Kolkata over the next few days, with rainfall intensity expected to increase from Monday.
South Bengal is expected to witness light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in several districts. A Yellow alert has been issued for Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad, where thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph and moderate rainfall are likely. Rainfall activity is expected to reduce on Friday and Saturday before increasing again from Sunday, with heavy rain forecast for Birbhum, Murshidabad and West Burdwan on Tuesday.
In North Bengal, the IMD has issued an Orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri on Thursday and Friday. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar remain under a Yellow alert for heavy rain. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across these districts on Saturday, while very heavy rain is forecast again on Sunday. Rainfall is expected to intensify further on Monday, with heavy rain likely in all North Bengal districts by Tuesday.
For Kolkata, the weather office has predicted intermittent drizzle or light rain in the short term. In the absence of rainfall, residents may continue to experience humid conditions due to high moisture levels in the atmosphere. The city's minimum temperature on Thursday was recorded at 26.9 degrees Celsius.
