In an unprecedented move, Kolkata Police has decided to set up a dedicated police outpost specifically for the security of the historic Kalighat Temple premises and its visitors. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda issued formal directives regarding the establishment of this separate outpost, marking the first time Lalbazar has set up a dedicated outpost for a single religious site.
According to an official statement issued by the Kolkata Police, the decision was taken to maintain law and order, control crowds, and address historical security risks and potential terror threats surrounding the shrine. The decision follows heightened concerns over potential sabotage and recent traces of foreign terrorist activities within the state.
The new outpost will function under the jurisdiction of the Kalighat police station and will be monitored directly by the DC South. It will be staffed by a 20-member police team led by an Inspector-rank officer, comprising two Sub-Inspectors, a Sergeant, eight constables, and five female constables to assist visitors and manage daily operations.
