Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a substantial hike in the monthly medical allowance for former Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Speaking in the State Assembly on Wednesday, the Chief Minister declared that the medical grant for former lawmakers would be increased by ₹4,000 per month. Previously, former MLAs received ₹6,000 per month for medical expenses, which will now stand at ₹10,000 per month effective from August.
Addressing the Assembly, Chief Minister Adhikari stated that the previous administration had failed to provide adequate post-retirement financial security to former representatives who served the public with honesty and dedication. He cited examples of former legislators living in modest conditions and engaging in small local trade or sitting at railway stations to interact with citizens. The decision aims to address the health and financial wellbeing of retired lawmakers across party lines.
To give legal effect to the medical allowance enhancement, the state government plans to introduce necessary legislation during the upcoming Assembly session. The Chief Minister confirmed that once the legislative framework is finalized, all eligible former MLAs will receive the revised allowance retroactively from August.
