A 30-year-old nurse was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside a locked washroom at the state-run Nilratan Sarkar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday night. The deceased nurse, a resident of Dumdum, was on night shift duty at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the hospital's Gynaecology Department. According to police, she reported for duty at 8:00 PM and went to the staff toilet at around 10:20 PM. When she failed to return after several minutes, suspicious colleagues went to check on her and found the door locked from the inside.
After repeated calls and knocks went unanswered, hospital staff members Mohammad Shamsher Alam and Shreya Gain broke open the toilet door. They discovered the nurse lying unconscious on the floor and immediately moved her to a hospital bed. The attending doctor examined the young woman and declared her dead. Police officials from the Entally police station along with detectives from the Homicide department reached the spot following an alert from the hospital outpost to conduct an initial inquiry.
A preliminary examination of the scene revealed no visible injury marks on her body or any suicide note. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee visited NRS Hospital on Thursday morning to review the situation and speak with hospital administrators and on-duty personnel. The police have seized her phone and initiated a thorough investigation into all possible angles.
