A major train accident was narrowly averted at Barhiya railway station in Bihar's Lakhisarai district on Thursday afternoon. The situation unfolded when a train arrived at platform number two, and several passengers opted to cross the main tracks to reach another platform instead of using the foot overbridge. While people were on the tracks, a high-speed express train approached on the down line, triggering widespread panic and chaos across the station premises.
Passengers scrambled in all directions to reach safety as the express train swept past. According to local vendor Sunny, while some managed to scramble onto the platform in time, several others were caught in the narrow gap between two moving trains. Local youth filming the crowded station captured the entire incident on camera. Despite the terrifying scene, no casualties or injuries were reported, and all passengers escaped unharmed.
The viral footage has sparked critical discussions around passenger safety and infrastructure adequacy. Addressing the incident, Kiul Junction Station Master God Prasad explained that the presence of only a single foot overbridge at Barhiya station leads to heavy congestion, causing people to take dangerous shortcuts. Railway authorities reminded the public that track trespassing is a punishable offense under Section 147 of the Railway Act 1989 and strongly urged commuters to strictly use foot overbridges.
