A tragic disaster struck North Kolkata's Jorabagan area early Tuesday morning after incessant heavy rains triggered the partial collapse of a dangerous 200-year-old building. The incident occurred around 5:00 AM on Brojodulal Street when a significant portion of the three-story structure suddenly caved in. Local residents reported hearing a deafening crash before realizing that parts of the dilapidated building had collapsed into rubble.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had previously marked the structure as dangerous; however, multiple families continued living inside, taking severe risks. Trapped occupants were caught under the debris following the sudden collapse. An elderly woman tragically lost her life after being crushed under the rubble. The tragic incident triggered widespread panic and intense excitement among local residents in the area.
Upon receiving the news, senior police officials alongside rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Disaster Management Group (DMG) rushed to the scene. Operating on a wartime footing, rescue personnel safely extracted the trapped residents from the site. Meanwhile, separate structural collapse incidents were also reported in parts of Howrah, where portion of a century-old house collapsed due to the continuous downpour.
