The Kaikhali area adjacent to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport of Kolkata has turned into a waterlogged nightmare after continuous rainfall for the past two days. For more than 36 hours, residents have been trapped in waist-deep stagnant water, with no signs of drainage efforts by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.
The stagnant water has raised serious health concerns. Locals fear the presence of poisonous insects and snakes, posing an immediate threat to children and the elderly. The risk of waterborne diseases is also increasing as rains continue to lash the city.
Residents expressed their anger over the administration’s inaction, alleging that every year during monsoon, they face similar hardships due to poor drainage systems. Despite repeated complaints, no permanent solution has been implemented. Locals also pointed out that neither water pumps have been deployed nor any relief teams have arrived to assist them.
“The corporation only appears during elections, but during crises like this, they are nowhere to be seen,” said an agitated resident. The frustration has escalated to the point where locals have warned of gheraoing the municipal corporation office if immediate action is not taken.
With more rain predicted, the situation is expected to worsen unless urgent measures, including pumping out water and preventive health actions, are taken.
