The Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice of India on Thursday granted interim protection from arrest to Sumit Roy, personal assistant to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. However, the court directed Roy to cooperate with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe and appear for questioning on a daily basis.
During the hearing, the CID informed the court that it seeks custodial interrogation of Sumit Roy. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CID, alleged that a former chief minister of the state had previously obstructed Roy's arrest. Following the submissions, the Supreme Court instructed the CID to file a formal affidavit detailing its position.
Sumit Roy faces charges in two separate corruption cases registered in West Midnapore district. These include a land corruption case at the Shalboni police station and a job recruitment corruption case at the Debra police station, both of which are currently being investigated by the CID.
