Passengers travelling through Sealdah station will now have easier access to mail and express trains after the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway inaugurated a new Central Gate ahead of the Durga Puja travel season. Railway officials said the new entry and exit point has been introduced to improve passenger movement and provide quicker access to long-distance train platforms.
Until now, passengers depended on the Prafulla Gate, North Gate, Main Gate, and South Gate to enter and exit the station. With the opening of the Central Gate, passengers travelling on mail and express services will be able to reach their designated platforms directly, reducing walking distance and improving convenience.
The new facility also provides easier access to the prepaid taxi stand located outside the station. According to railway officials, the additional gate is expected to reduce congestion inside the station and streamline passenger movement, particularly during peak travel periods.
The Railways said the initiative is expected to benefit senior citizens, women, children and passengers carrying heavy luggage by making station access more convenient and organised. The move is part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger amenities and station infrastructure.
Divisional Railway Manager of Sealdah Division, Rajiv Saxena, said the objective is to make travel more comfortable, safe and convenient for every passenger. He said the Central Gate is an important step towards modernising Sealdah station, improving passenger circulation and strengthening facilities for long-distance travellers. The Sealdah Division also plans to develop app-based cab pick-up and drop-off points and a modern public toilet near the new gate in the future.
