BJP Rajya Sabha MP and State BJP President Shamik Bhattacharya has written to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, urging the State Government to secure one of the chemical parks proposed under the Centre's Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojana – Rasayan (Bhavya) scheme. In his letter, he proposed Singur, Durgapur, Haldia and Raghunathpur as potential locations and said the project could play a significant role in reviving industrial growth, attracting investment and generating employment in West Bengal.
Shamik stated that establishing a chemical park in the state would create opportunities for large-scale industrial expansion and require close coordination between the State Government and the Centre. He requested the government to identify a suitable site for the project and said the State could also consider any other appropriate location apart from those suggested in his letter.
The proposal follows the Union Cabinet's approval of the Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojana – Rasayan (Bhavya) scheme on July 24. Under the scheme, three dedicated chemical parks will be developed across the country at a total cost of ₹3,030 crore. The Centre will provide financial assistance of up to ₹1,000 crore for each park, while the respective State Government will contribute ₹500 crore. Each project requires around 2,000 acres of land, with land acquisition and availability being the responsibility of the State.
According to the proposal, setting up a chemical park in West Bengal would create infrastructure worth at least ₹1,500 crore through joint funding by the Centre and the State. The project is expected to support employment in the chemical, construction, logistics and MSME sectors while benefiting industries including textiles, pharmaceuticals, electronics, agriculture and automobiles. The proposal also includes the development of modern waste management facilities and Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs).
In his letter, Shamik recommended the formation of an inter-departmental task force to prepare the State's application under the scheme. He also urged the government to complete documentation for the required 2,000 acres of land, allocate ₹500 crore for the project in the upcoming State budget and maintain coordination with the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Petrochemicals. Copies of the letter were also sent to State Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta, Industries Minister Tapas Roy and the Industry Secretary.
