In a step to enhance campus security following last month’s gang rape incident, South Kolkata Law College has decided to replace private security personnel with ex-servicemen. The decision was taken during the governing body meeting held on Saturday, aiming to make the college premises completely foolproof.
A senior college official confirmed that the services of existing private guards will soon be terminated, and trained ex-army personnel will take over security responsibilities. “We believe ex-servicemen, with their discipline and expertise, can ensure better safety for students,” the official stated.
Additionally, the college administration has announced plans to install more CCTV cameras across the campus to improve surveillance. The internal complaints committee, responsible for addressing harassment-related issues, will also be strengthened to provide a safer environment for students, particularly women.
The move comes after widespread outrage over the alleged gang rape of a female student by Manojit Mishra, a former student and contract worker of the college, who was also associated with the ruling party’s student wing. The shocking incident triggered demands for stricter security and accountability within educational institutions.
With these new measures, the college aims to restore confidence among students and parents while sending a strong message against any form of misconduct on campus.
