Commuters returning home during peak Friday evening rush hours faced severe inconvenience after Metro services on Kolkata’s Blue Line were partially disrupted following a suicide attempt. At approximately 7:57 PM, security personnel at Rabindra Sarovar station responded to reports of a 30-year-old woman jumping in front of an approaching train. Metro staff immediately cut the power supply to the third line to initiate a rescue operation, managing to extricate the woman safely without any reported injuries before rushing her to a nearby hospital.
The incident forced Metro authorities to suspend train operations along the major southern stretch between Maidan and Shahid Khudiram stations. To maintain partial connectivity, truncated services were operated only between Dakshineswar and Maidan in both up and down directions. The sudden suspension created massive rush and confusion at several stations during peak evening travel hours, leaving thousands of office-goers struggling to find alternative surface transport.
Full services across the entire Blue Line corridor were eventually restored after 9:00 PM once safety clearances were completed. Although Metro Railway has previously implemented various precautionary measures to curb suicide attempts on the tracks, Friday's incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by transit authorities. Police and Metro officials have launched an inquiry to ascertain the reasons behind the woman's action, while station crowds gradually normalized late into the night.
