Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin visited Panihati Girls' High School and paid floral tributes at the grave of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, the noted social reformer and pioneer of women's education, during her visit to West Bengal after a prolonged exile. She spent time with teachers and students at the school and interacted with the children. During the visit, Taslima Nasrin also spoke against religion-based politics and stated that Sheikh Hasina should be given the opportunity to participate in politics in Bangladesh.
Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was laid to rest on December 9, 1932, in Sodepur, in North 24 Parganas district near Kolkata. Taslima Nasrin paid homage at the grave of the pioneering educationist and social reformer, recalling her contributions to women's education and social awareness. She also shared her reflections on Begum Rokeya's legacy and its enduring significance during the visit.
The visit also marked Taslima Nasrin's interaction with the local community after returning from a long exile. She spent considerable time with the teachers and students of Panihati Girls' High School, where she participated in the programme and interacted with schoolchildren while paying tribute to the life and work of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.
