The ongoing conflict between Left-leaning student organizations and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Jadavpur University reached the Calcutta High Court. Petitioners approached the court seeking an urgent intervention and hearing regarding the violent midnight clashes that shook the campus. The plea sought to tie the violence to an existing pending case related to the university to secure an immediate hearing.
However, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty refused to grant an urgent hearing on the matter. The bench declined to take up the incident under the previously filed petition and directed the applicants to file a fresh standalone case instead. This decision leaves the judicial response to the recent campus unrest deferred until a formal petition is submitted following due legal procedure.
The legal move follows a night of intense clashes sparked during a General Body meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students' Union (FETSU). With both Left groups and the ABVP lodging complaints and organizing counter-protests, security forces have been deployed in and around the campus to prevent further escalation.
