A 45-year-old farmer villager identified as Kheeru Mahto died in Chalkari village under Topchachi block, about 39 km from the district headquarters, on Saturday afternoon.

Topchachi Police Station Superintendent Jayaram Prasad said the incident took place around 3:00 p.m. The victim went to herd goats in a nearby field when he was suddenly struck by lightning in the midst of a drizzle.

The villagers immediately took him to Topchachi Community Health Center (CHC) where the doctor declared him brought dead. The doctor said the victim's body was badly burned by lightning.

Topchachi police also reached the hospital and sent the body to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad for autopsy.
