The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that obesity rates among children and adolescents have nearly quadrupled and increased nearly fivefold since 1975. Many noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, and various types of cancer, are at increased risk due to obesity. Additionally, it can result in mental health problems, which in turn can promote obesity.

Mental health is directly affected by obesity. When a person gains a lot of weight, their self-esteem and self-esteem usually suffer. Dr Kamna Chhibber, Head of Mental Health, Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences, Fortis Healthcare, said in her report: “Being obese can affect the way a person views their own self. There are often stories or meanings attached to a certain body type and this can make a person vulnerable to these stereotypical responses and reactions. These can cause a lot of anxiety, affect moods and lead to increased anxiety or nervousness. This can also happen due to health and other concerns that may arise due to weight related issues.

Obesity can affect self-esteem

According to Dr. Chhibbera Obesity-related issues and other concerns can lead to an impact on one's self-esteem, feelings of dignity, and in places where one feels judged or unable to perform adequately, it can also drain confidence. Such scenarios can also cause a person to avoid situations or people, and can impact work, household chores, and relationships, compromising their quality of life. Treatment of obesity requires a comprehensive strategy. The WHO states that "a complex mix of dietary, lifestyle, genetic, psychological, sociocultural, economic and environmental factors".

It suggests “limiting the marketing of foods and drinks high in fat, sugar and salt to children; taxing sugary drinks and providing better access to affordable healthy food. We need to create space for safe walking, cycling and recreation in our cities and towns. We need to teach our children healthy habits from an early age.”

Tips to reduce Obesity

1. Eat right: A balanced diet consists of healthy foods that provide your body with enough nutrients. Foods that have a high proportion of salt and sugar are dangerous for the body. Avoid fast food, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking. Regular consumption of fried things is also a big no-no. People tend to overeat if there is a large gap between two meals. Avoid it. Eat healthy foods at frequent intervals. Pampering your taste buds with pizza and pastries is fine as long as it's done occasionally.

2. Exercise, it feels good!: Exercise shouldn't be a chore. It should be a fun activity; something to look forward to. A lot of people have the misconception that exercise means lifting heavy weights and working up a sweat in the gym. This is only one aspect of exercise, not the only one. There are several ways you can ensure that you are involved in some type of physical activity. Swimming, dancing, jogging, etc. are also ways to burn extra calories and exercise your muscles.

3. Sleep offers more: People usually associate sleep with rest. Sound sleep will do more for your body and mind. It affects neuroendocrine cells, glucose metabolism and other functions that are responsible for enabling smooth bodily functions. For example, lack of sleep can impair hormones related to appetite, which can lead to overeating leading to obesity.

4. Stay consistent: Regularity is very important in weight management. Eating right, exercising right, and sleeping right all require regularity. Doing it for a month and then going off schedule for the next won't help matters. Follow the above activities and take proactive measures if you go off track.

5. Overcome Stress: Stress can mess with your mind and body in many ways. If you find yourself in a situation where you are chronically tired and sleep deprived, it is time to take control of your life and control the factors that cause stress. Breaking down under stress can cause a metabolic imbalance leading to a number of problems, including obesity. See your doctor as soon as possible and take remedial measures if you feel stressed all the time.
