A 20-year-old college student who failed to stop at a police checkpoint was shot dead by a police officer in Bihar's Jehanabad district late on Tuesday. Sudhir Kumar Yadav, a first-year college student who suffered a gunshot wound, later said he evaded the team at the check post because he did not have a driving license.

Jehanabad Superintendent of Police (SP) P Deepak Ranjan said Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mumtaz Khan has been arrested and his service weapon has been sent to the forensic laboratory for ballistic testing. The Station House Officer (SHO) of the Okri police station Chandrahas Kumar and five police constables who were part of the police team conducting vehicle checks have been suspended.

Sudhir Kumar Yadav's father Rabindra Yadav said the policeman who shot his son was drunk. Police said Sudhir, who was taken to a local private hospital by the policeman who allegedly shot him, is a resident of Karthu village in Nalanda district.

The incident took place in Ananthpur village, a few kilometres from Sudhir's house, in the adjoining Jehanabad district. SHO Chandrahas Kumar and ASI were at the police check post set up to check passing vehicles. The checkpoint was part of a district-wide campaign to check vehicles.

Sudhir Yadav said he got off the motorcycle to go to the market when he saw the police team. He didn't have a driver's license or a helmet.

“I was speeding when the SHO at the check post tried to stop me. The policeman chased me for about 4 kilometres and then shot at me,” he said. A bullet hit him in the back and he fell. "My son was scared that the police would implicate him in a false case," explained Sudhir Yadav's father to explain why he did not stop at the checkpoint.
